About Me
Dr. Scottie Buehler is a midwife turned historian of medicine. Her research interrogates the gendered and racialized practices of medicine in early modern France and its colonies, creating new historical narratives that alter our understanding of the medicalization of obstetrics. Dr. Buehler advocates for midwifery nationally and employs her historical expertise in accrediting direct entry midwifery programs. Adhering to the notion that history shapes professional identities today, Dr. Buehler remains committed to creating historical accounts that uphold the diversity and complexity of midwifery practices and practitioners throughout time. She is an Assistant Professor in History and Founding Director of the Medical and Health Humanities program at Sam Houston State University.
